Weight Loss Tip:

Small Steps for Big Resolutions

(By: Kimberly A. Tessmer, RD LD)

Don't think long term for your New Year's resolutions but short term instead.  Make short term goals for yourself to reach and as you reach these short term goals set more!  This helps to keep you on track and make setting and achieving goals more realistic!  Instead of resolving to lose 50 pounds, set a goal to cut your intake of soft drinks in half or to walk one day a week.  These are more realistic goals that will eventually get you to your goal of 50 pounds!  Small changes can pay off in big rewards!

Savor Your Veggies

(By: Kimberly A. Tessmer, RD LD)

If you are not careful you may be pouring the good things that your veggies provide like vitamins and minerals right down the drain!  Cooking your vegetables in too much water at too high of a temperature can lower the nutrient content.  Vitamins and some minerals are very heat sensitive so boiling vegetables too long can destroy those healthy nutrients!  Steaming is your best option for vegetables.  Use very little water and let the steam cook your veggies!!

Stroll to Your Hearts Content

(By: Kimberly A. Tessmer, RD LD)

Both the Surgeon General and the American Heart Association agree that you can walk away from serious health problems.  Each states that adopting a routine that includes daily physical activity, such as walking, will help you to achieve this goal and more.  A daily stroll can help you to control your weight and body fat by burning additional calories.  Regular walks can also help to reduce your risk of dying prematurely, significantly reduce your risk of coronary artery disease or heart disease and increase your likelihood of quitting or cutting back on smoking as well as changing other lifestyle habits.
