Weight Loss Tip:

It's Back to School Time

(By: Kimberly A. Tessmer, RD LD)

Back to school probably means the return of a more hectic schedule.  There is kids to drop off, sporting events to attend, after school activities, homework to do at night and the list goes on and on.  Don't let your weight loss efforts now become your last priority.  Make it a point to write down what you need to do to reach your goals along with the rest of the tasks on your busy "to do" list.  If you have to, schedule your exercise, your trip to the grocery store and some time for yourself.  Plan your meals ahead of time by writing them down.  If you are not doing it already, keep a food diary so that you know you are sticking to what you need to.  Don't let back to school time be an excuse to fall of the wagon!

Nutrition News:

Don't Substitute a Pill for Healthy Foods!

(By: Kimberly A. Tessmer, RD LD)

Are you relying too heavily on the multivitamin supplement that you take daily? The very best way to get the vitamins and minerals that you need everyday is through food, not a pill!  Multivitamins can help ensure you getting what you need IF they are taking in conjunction with an already healthy diet.  Don't substitute a pill for eating healthy.  Try swapping your favorite junk food snack for a piece of fresh seasonal fruit, like an apple or a pear, or munch a serving of baby carrots and cucumber spears with hummus.  Eat a wholesome breakfast and bring a healthy lunch to work with you so you are not tempted to eat out or eat fast food.  Plan your dinner ahead of time so you have what you need and are not tempted to call for takeout!  A multivitamin is not a cure all for a poor diet!  Healthy foods have much more than just vitamins and minerals such as phytonutrients, fiber, healthy fats, etc...  You can't find these substances in pills!

Challenge Yourself Daily

(By: Kimberly A. Tessmer, RD LD)

Having trouble getting motivated to do some daily walking?  Try buying yourself a pedometer that can keep track of the steps you take as well as calories burned and distance walked.  This can help give you some motivation to do at least what you did the day before if not better!  Challenge yourself daily!
