Popcorn is a whole-grain snack
included among foods recommended to boost whole grain intake in the
2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. A study in the May Journal
of the American Dietetic Association states people who eat
popcorn have an approximately 250 percent higher daily intake of whole
grains and a 22 percent higher daily intake of fiber than non-popcorn
eaters.
Many people enjoy popcorn at the movies, but that giant bucket most
theaters sell is usually loaded with fat. The smallest size available
should satisfy your craving. Or, if the theater allows it, bring your
own. Be sure to avoid the “butter topping” theaters offer.
Air-popped popcorn without added oil or salt is your healthiest
popcorn option. For microwave or ready-made popcorn, check the label
for oil and salt free products.
