Weight Loss Tip:

Summer Movie Season Means Popcorn

Popcorn is a whole-grain snack included among foods recommended to boost whole grain intake in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. A study in the May Journal of the American Dietetic Association states people who eat popcorn have an approximately 250 percent higher daily intake of whole grains and a 22 percent higher daily intake of fiber than non-popcorn eaters.

Many people enjoy popcorn at the movies, but that giant bucket most theaters sell is usually loaded with fat. The smallest size available should satisfy your craving. Or, if the theater allows it, bring your own. Be sure to avoid the “butter topping” theaters offer.

Air-popped popcorn without added oil or salt is your healthiest popcorn option. For microwave or ready-made popcorn, check the label for oil and salt free products.

Summer Food Safety

Summer outings or weekends at the beach are great opportunities for a picnic, but before you pack up, make sure you know the basics of food safety.

Food safety starts with proper food handling. That begins at the time of purchase and continues all the way to storing leftovers. When you get ready for outdoor events, remember the following:

  • Wash hands before, during and after handling food. Bring sanitizing gel or towelettes.
  • Keep cold foods below 40 degrees Fahrenheit and hot foods above 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Store cooked foods separate from raw foods.
  • Don't let perishables such as meat, fish, poultry and dairy foods sit out for more than one hour.
  • Transport foods to the grill on one plate and off the grill on another plate.
  • Store leftovers in tightly sealed containers.

And finally if you're not sure if food has spoiled, throw it away. For more information visit www.homefoodsafety.org.

Fitness Fun:

Five Ways to Start Moving

Do you find it difficult to fit 30 minutes of physical activity into your life every day? It can be done.

Even with a busy lifestyle, you can boost your activity level. These everyday activities can count toward your day’s total if they’re done with moderate intensity – and most take little, if any, extra time.

  • Get up 30 minutes earlier in the morning and take a brisk walk to start your day.
  • Forget the drive-through car wash. Wash the car yourself. You’ll save money at the same time.
  • Do some backyard gardening. Try growing fresh vegetables and herbs.
  • Push your lawn mower instead of using the power-assisted drive.
  • Play actively with your kids, grandchildren or pets. Some dogs like to play Frisbee as much as kids do.
